In recognition of his lifetime record of innovative ideas and discoveries in fundamental and applied chemical research focusing on photocatalysis and energy conversion and storage, which have had a profound influence on many generations of researchers, and his broad and far-reaching impact on scientific enterprise worldwide. Of particular note is his invention and development of the dye-sensitized solar cell, now known as the “Grätzel” cell, which provides a low-cost, large-scale solution for renewable energy.
