Lei Xu, Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK); Zhiyuan Chair Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department, Chief Scientist of AI Research Institute, Director of SEIEE Centre for Cognitive Machine and Computational Health (CMaCH), Chief Scientist of Brain Sci & Tech Research Centre, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU); Chief Scientist of SJTU-Sensetime Research Institute; Director of Neural Computation Research Centre in Brain and Intelligence Science-Technology Institute, Zhang Jiang National Lab. Elected to Fellow of IEEE in 2001; Fellow of intl. Association for Pattern Recognition in 2002 and of European Academy of Sciences (EURASC) in 2003. Received several national and international academic awards, including 1988 Chinese State Education Council FOK YING TUNG Award, 1988 Top-10 BEIJING YOUNG SCIENTISTS PRIZE, 1993 National Nature Science Award, 1995 Leadership Award from International Neural Networks Society (INNS) and 2006 Asia Pacific Neural Network Society (APNNS) Outstanding Achievement Award after the 2004 winner Prof Amari and the 2005 winner Prof. Fukushima.

Completed Ph.D thesis at Tsinghua Univ by the end of 1986, Get PhD certificate from Tsinghua Univ in March 1987, joined Peking Univ as postdoc in 1987 and promoted exceptionally to associate professor in 1988. Worked as postdoc and visiting scientist in Finland, Canada and USA (including Prof. A. Yuille team in Harvard and Prof. M. Jordan team in MIT) during 1989-93. Joined CUHK as senior lecturer since 1993, professor since 1996, and chair professor during 2002-16. Joined SJTU as Zhiyuan chair professor since the summer of 2016.

Conducted researches in several areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for 37+ years, such as neural networks and machine learning, signal processing (speech, radar, finance), computer vision and pattern recognition, and bioinformatics. Published about 400 papers (including 130+ Journal papers), highlighted by his influential contributions on studies of Randomized Hough Transform (RHT), RPCL, classifier combination, mixture model based learning, LMSER, RPCL, nonlinear PCA, independence learning, mixture of experts, EM algorithm, RBF nets, Bayesian Ying-Yang (BYY) harmony and bidirectional learning, with Web of Science citations (1355 by top-1, 4030+ by top-10 papers, and 5380+ by top-50 papers) and Google Scholar citations (2820 by top-1, 8350+ by top-10 papers, and 11750+ by top-50 papers). Given over dozens keynote /invited lectures at various international conferences.

Taken various roles in academic societies, e.g., INNS Governing Board (2001-03), the INNS award committee (2002-03), and the Fellow committee of IEEE Computational Intelligence society (2006-07), and the EURASC scientific committee (2014-17). Also served as a general chair of IEEE Intl Conf. on Computational Intelligence and Financial Engineering 2003, Intl Confs IDEAL98, and IDEAL00, International advisory committee chair, IDEAL (2001-2014) , Joint-ICANN-ICONIP03 program committee co-chair, a program committee chair of ICONIP96 and a honorary chair of ICONIP06, NIPS Overseas Liaison (1995, 96, 97) and the chairs of two NIPS Workshops (1992, 94), as well as program/organizing /Advisory committee members on major world conferences on Neural Networks, including WCNN, ICNN, IJCNN, IEEE WCCI, ICONIP, NIPS, ICANN, IDEAL, and Intl. Conf. on Computational Finance, etc.

Prof. Xu has also been serving as a member of engineering panel, Hong Kong RGC research committee (2001-06), a member of selection committee, Chinese NSFC/HK RGC Joint research scheme (2002-05, 08), external expert for Chinese NSFC information science panel (2004-06). Additionally, an nominator for the prestigious Kyoto prize (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) and also an nominator for the LUI Che Woo Prize (2016, 2017, 2018, 2020).

4. The 2006 APNNA Outstanding Achievement Award, following the 2004 winner Prof Amari and the 2005 winner Prof. Fukushima.

5. A Special Long Term Contribution award for his long term outstanding contributions to promote the progresses and international exchanges of neural networks research in China, Oct, 2005, Chinese Neural Networks Council.

6. International Neural Network Society Leadership Award, awarded on the 1995 World Congress on Neural Networks, July, Washington, DC., USA.

7. Chinese National Natural Science Award in 1993 (co-recipient).

8. Chinese Education Ministry FOK YING TUNG FOUNDATION Prize, awarded on the first inauguration of the prize, September 1988.

This prize is set for young scientist with age below 45, covering all the scientific fields. In 1988, 42 persons awarded in the whole country, one per field. I was the winner for the field of Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Control.

10. Excellent paper award for young researchers in the 1988 National Conference of the Chinese Automation Society (ranked the 1st among all the five awardees) 1988年获中国自动化学会青年优秀论文奖(五位获奖者之首)

11. Tsinghua University Outstanding Doctor Dissertation Prize (University level) on the first inauguration of the prize 首届清华大学优秀博士论文奖.

Focused on three directions:

• Basic research of AI : bidirectional learning and intelligence, causal reasoning and computing, hierarchical RHT and AlphaGo like problem solving.

• Computational Health: published over 20 conference and journal papers, not just in the bioinformatics literature of IEEE and AI, but also sometimes in medical literature, e.g., published in Nature Communications, Chinese Journal of Cancer Research, with a role of one corresponding author.

• Portfolio management and Intelligent finance: published also over 20 conference and journal papers, Served as the chair of Computational Finance Technical Committee of IEEE Neural Networks Society (2001-03) and general cochair of IEEE Intl Conf. on Computational Intelligence and Financial Engineering 2003.
